Col. Lawrence Schloegl assumed command of the Camp Grayling Joint Military Training Center from Col. Thomas Perison at a ceremony held Sunday at the armory on Camp Grayling. The ceremony was officiated by Brig. Gen. Mike Stone, Assistant Adjutant General for Installations for the Michigan National Guard.
Perison highlighted the exercises and many updates to Camp Grayling during his time as commander, hosting two brigade-sized exercises, a new control tower on the airfield, and improved simulations centers for service members and law enforcement agents to use for training. He also recognized the staff members on Camp Grayling for their critical role in the success he experienced during his time in command. He concluded by thanking the partners in the community for their support while he commanded Camp Grayling.
“Camp Grayling has flourished under Tom’s direction,” said Stone. “He has succeeded in making sure Camp Grayling stays on the cutting edge of training facilities and retains its position as the crown jewel of military training installations, not only in Michigan but the country.”
The incoming commander, Col. Schloegl, has served in the Michigan Guard for more than 25 years including duty on Camp Grayling. “Some of my fondest memories of my time in the military were from my time spent here at Camp Grayling,” said Schloegl. “This is an outstanding installation and it is the people who make it so great.”
About Camp Grayling: Camp Grayling was founded in 1913 when local lumber baron, Rasmus Hanson, donated over 13,000 acres to the State of Michigan for military training. Camp Grayling has since grown to 147,000 acres that spans over three counties of maneuver area, state-of-the-art ranges, and modern support facilities, making it the largest National Guard training center in the country.
