A Michigan Army National Guard family has been selected by the National Guard Bureau as the Family of the Year for 2015.
Col. Tim Houchlei and his family, wife, Karen, children Samantha, Noah, and Joshua of Mason, Mich., were nominated by the Michigan National Guard Family Programs office based on individual and cumulative volunteer hours with a number of programs for Guard families and children.
Karen has volunteered for many child and youth events to include; Drop and Shops, yellow ribbon events, and month of the military child events. She was also the family readiness group president for the 126th Press Camp Headquarters when Col. Houchlei was deployed to Iraq as the commander of the unit.
All three kids have served as members of the State Youth Council. The Youth Council helps plan youth related events, including teen symposiums and various other activities.
“This award is such a special way to honor my family that has stood by me during my 35 years of service,” said Col. Houchlei, the chief of staff for the Michigan Army National Guard. “They are the ones most deserving of this award.”
Col. Houchlei and his family were presented with the award at the 2015 Family Programs conference.
