Soldiers, family and friends gathered at the Michigan Army National Guard Armory in Grand Ledge last summer, to honor the lives of two 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment Soldiers: Sgt. Jason Bennish and Spc. Levi Light.
The group gathered at the memorial wall for a ceremony that began with Sgt. Ethan Walker offering a eulogy that recalled Light’s adventurous spirit, quick wit and uplifting sense of humor. Following military tradition, 1st Sgt. Scott Robertson conducted a final roll call, to which all but two Soldiers replied.
Fellow Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, General Support Aviation Battalion paid respect to their comrades and attached brass name plates in honor of their memory, to the memorial wall bearing names of those who died while in service to the unit, both abroad and at home.
Sgt. Jason Bennish was born Feb. 4th, 1986 in Wayne County, Michigan. He enlisted in the Army on Sept. 23rd, 2010 and graduated from Basic Training in March 2011. He completed Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia to obtain a military occupation specialty code 92A, Automated Logistical Specialist.
Bennish arrived in Grand Ledge fresh out of AIT on March 24, 2011. He was assigned to Echo Company, 3-238th Battalion, 46th Military Police Command where he served as an ALS. He was later assigned to Delta Company, 3-238th Battalion, 272nd Regional Support Group, where he also served as an ALS.
Bennish earned several awards and decorations including two Army Achievement Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, an Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, and a Michigan Service Medal.
He is survived by his wife Tracy Bennish, mother Christine, father Ethan, daughters Clara and Allie, son Jason, and sisters Sarah and Paige Bennish.
Staff Sgt. Nicholas Beller offered a eulogy remembering the dedicated spirit of Bennish. “A man,” Beller said, “who was always eager to lend a hand to anyone in need.”
Spc. Levi Light was born Oct. 4th, 1991 at Fort Hood, Texas. On March 20th, 2012 he enlisted in the Army. Light graduated Basic Training in November 2012 and shortly after completed AIT at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, with a 68W, Health Care Specialist, MOS.
Light arrived in Grand Ledge, Michigan on November 30th, 2012, and was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3-238th Battalion, 272nd RSG, where he served as a HCS.
Light deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he served as a HCS at the troop medical clinic. His awards and decorations include: Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, and a Michigan Service Medal.
He is survived by his father, Edwin Light, mother, Cindy Crapo, sister, Aurora Williams, brothers, Casey and Seth Light and brother, Lane Noe. His grandparents are Thelma and Aaron Curtis, and Mark and Marie Smith.
